The DNA of Healing: A Five-Step Process for Total Wellness and Abundance, by Margaret Ruby

Tapping into the current trend of a new view of genetics exemplified in books like The Biology of Belief, Margaret Ruby, herself a healer, shows how this research is becoming increasingly mainstream. In The DNA of Healing, Margaret Ruby teaches how to neutralize the negative patterns handed down through our family lineage and reprogram the DNA with positive patterns that manifest health, wellness, and abundance.

Revolutionary scientific research is proving that our emotions and thoughts can impact our health and shape the course of our lives. But if a positive attitude is all we need to live a healthier and happier life, why don't more people change more quickly? The answers lie deep in our DNA. Along with the color of our eyes and the shape of our nose, we have inherited the emotional patterns and beliefs of our ancestors. Like long-lost family secrets, these deeply embedded patterns influence our health, wealth, and relationships in ways we're not even aware of.

Margaret Ruby, a pioneer and educator in the field of healing and the founder of PossibilitiesDNA, has developed a system for isolating and reversing inherited traumas and negative patterns. The DNA of Healing reveals her breakthrough five-step process that has helped people around the world neutralize the unconscious programming they have inherited and reset their genetic codes for total wellness and abundance.

Blending the art of healing with cutting-edge research, Margaret Ruby shows how to work with your DNA on an energetic level, in effect rebooting it to its original blueprint. This extraordinary system allows you to reprogram your DNA with positive patterns--a concept that has tremendous ramifications for more than just your health. The DNA of Healing also shows how you can remove your self-limiting thought patterns about relationships and money, helping you get the abundant life you've always wanted.

More than a feeling....
By J. J. Gil
I had the pleasure to meet the author at a recent conference and later decided to purchase her book understanding that the strategies utilized to create the system of accessing entrenched emotions (cellular memory) are 100% valid and eloquently understated throughout the text. In other words, the benefits are not cloaked in technical jargon or academic mumbo jumbo but rather real life case studies often from the author's own experiences. This enhances and in no way diminish the efficacy of the ideas and process.

I remain moved by the notion that mere knowledge is not enough. For those who are adventurers and seekers, this may as well seem familiar given that new information enters into our awareness and then we do not know what to do with what we have learned about ourselves. The knowledge is therefore not enough to affect the results that inspire the search in the first place.

The DNA of Healing suggests an unusual approach that is attuned to our energy bodies (where the emotional memories persist) such that simple responses and numerical associations to questions evoke the resurfacing of buried feelings that quite amazingly may not be our own. What this means is that we carry the memory of a potential lineage of experience explaining various phobias and unhealthy propensities that we simply cannot grasp and for good reason. If we think of our energy bodies as an intangible blueprint, how is it indeed possible to interact with such an evasive and subtle though core aspect of our being?

It is my understanding that the author's coursework is more extensive than the overview offered in the book though the book's suggestions can be very effective if you let it and let go of any beliefs or expectations you might have about this experience. I assumed that I would not reap the benefits from reading and following the questions in the book on my own (a belief), though surprisingly, this was certainly not the case. The authenticity of the memories I tapped into created what I would describe as a daydream where I easily imagined what appeared to be embedded souls...many many many souls frankly... in a ritual of forgiveness that I gave to myself. Although the experiences may not be your own, you carry them with you so in this way they are a part of you NOW and these certainly impact your being and awareness in either positive or negative ways.

Though not a course in science or psychology or philosophy or any formal subject, the process utilizes information from many sources, including cutting edge energy medicine and ancient archetypes to provide a framework within which you may expose and neutralize no longer useful emotions that may be interfering with your life today. I highly recommend this book to seekers who aspire to become supremely well inner self managed individuals.

I have always held the feeling that we know more than we know that we know! Letting go of beliefs is definitely a step in the right direction and Ms. Ruby's guidance, for this seeker, has proven very effective and powerfully healing and clarifying which is the very point of this short book....

DNA is the celluar vehicle through which energy operates.

A few excerpts from the first Matrix Move suggests similar notions....

Morpheus ... "This is a sparring program, similar to the programmed reality of the Matrix. It has the same basic rules, rules like gravity. What you must learn is that these rules are no different than the rules of a computer system. Some of them can be bent, others can be broken. Understand? Then hit me, if you can."

Morpheus ... "But I can only show you the door. You're the one that has to walk through it."

Morpheus ... "Sooner or later you're going to realize, just as I did, there's a difference between knowing the path...and walking it."

DNA healing actually works
By Amazon Customer
I have been suffering from Writer's Block with a capitol "W" for
more than 20 years. I had my novel, "The Sex Changers of Tedawnis"
all written out in my head but whenever I started to write, I would
stop abruptly. It was like driving a car with the brakes on -- I
couldn't make any progress. Then I tried the technique in Margaret
Ruby's book, "DNA HEALING," and I am now writing at least an hour a
day using a Quikpad on the bus that I connect to my computer when
I reach home and the novel is three/quarters done. A little editing
and I'll send it to a Publish on Demand Press. I thank Margaret
Ruby, for making her knowledge about DNA healing available, I thank the manufacturer of the Quikpad, and I thank Amazon for recommending this wonderful life-changing book to me. I'll eventually be using the techniques in the DNA OF HEALING for other personal problems, but Writer's Block was the main one and that problem is now gone for good.
I had gone to psychologists, psychics and shamans to help me with my
Writer's Block over the years, but all they could do was inspire me
for a couple of days to write because their techniques did not reach
back to past life influences as Margaret Ruby's technique does, past
life experiences having the power to influence our DNA. Fortunately,
her techniques as taught in her book gives you the power to influence
your own current DNA for the better and removes the bad influences for
this lifetime and for future reincarnations. I can not recommend this book to highly as it has helped me more than any other book I have ever read with the one exception of the Bible. David Yasuo Henna Honolulu.

Amazon.com Review
Tim Allen, star of the hit sitcom Home Improvement, takes on quantum philosophy, intergender relationships, and the male midlife crisis in a joke-filled (but ultimately serious) "weekend in the life" narrative. It's an odd combination, shifting from enthusiastic gushing over restored sports cars to earnest elaborations upon Deepak Chopra and Fritjof Capra, but Allen manages to pull it off. If you're expecting a standard unchallenging celebrity-penned "book," or a fluff-filled "memoir," you're going to be quite surprised.

About the Author
Tim Allen has won six People's Choice Awards for his television show, Home Improvement, and he was twice nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. His first feature film, The Santa Clause, was a number one hit, and his first book, Don't Stand Too Close to a Naked Man, was a number one bestseller. He lives with his wife and daughter in Los Angeles and Michigan.

Tim Allen has my gratitude for a life changing book
By Kelli McPherson
I have read all of these reviews, and am very surprised by some of them. This book is a personal journey for Tim Allen. One he invited us to come along for. No, it is not the intense humor of his first book, and no it is not a Quantum Physics text book. Nor do I think it was meant to rival anything by David Bohm. Actually he seems to be in awe of Mr. Bohm. This is a deep book which will speak to those open to it. It is better off left alone by those who cannot grasp it, or better yet, are not ready to, as well as those who have forgotten their path and feel that they are too far beyond it. What I found in this book was an intelligent questioning person who has pushed himself to grow immensely. I do not think Mr. Allen meant to rival great minds in Quantum Physics, merely to show us what can happen to us if we explore something outside our everyday humdrum existence as he has. If you are looking for a repeat of his first book, open yourself and try something new. If you are into Quantum Physics, open it and remember your roots, and don't take yourself so seriously, (another message in this book). Open your mind and you will love this book.

Was he there when he wrote it?
By Naila Moon
I like the author as actor and comedian so, I thought picking up this book would be a good fit for me. Well...
Tim Allen, the family man, finds himself alone for one weekend and having an issue finding a car part and in the midst of a mid-life crisis. His search for the part allows him to search for unanswered questions on the meaning of life.

I found myself at time giggling at the author's personal antidotes and flashbacks of childhood but I thought the book would be more funny. I thought it would be even more about his life. It wasn't, at least not that much. In fact, the author sometimes carried on with such dribble about quantum physics that it was painful to read. The next to last chapter was nothing more than a letter from a friend that I almost decided to skip it altogether.

However, I didn't. The reason is that I find the meaning of life to be a interesting topic. Quantum physics aside, it becomes important to all of us at some points in our lives. In essence, we all eventually question why we are here or have a mid-life crisis. For the author, this book was much more like a diary, so personal that he was compelled to write it. The thought though is maybe he should not have.

In any case, I found the book to be okay and rather honest. Although, he could have made the whole thing up in some regard as he might have not been there when he wrote it. *wink* For his efforts and thought provoking ideas he gets my 3 stars.

Disclosure: I purchased a copy of this book for my own collections. The views here are 100% my own and may differ from yours. ~M.M. aka Naila Moon

Quite a pleasant surprise
By J. Doan
After reading this book, I have a new and better view of Tim Allen. This review is also to counter the mindless and sometimes rediculous negative reviews by some Amazon.com contributors. Tim's first book was much more comedy oriented. If this had been his first book, the masses would not have believed it was written by Tim Allen, the grunting, knuckle-dragging man-nut from television comedy. Mr Allen presents us with a deep, thought provoking and emotional (yes, there WAS some real emotion here) journey with a douse of fiction which creates an interesting and truly good read. I was thoroughly entranced with this book, and it was not difficult to understand. It did not require much thought or concentration to get in to, yet also did not require that you throw logic out the window to enjoy. Kudos to Mr. Allen for creating a beautiful piece of literature.

In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto, by Michael Pollan

#1 New York Times Bestseller

Food. There's plenty of it around, and we all love to eat it. So why should anyone need to defend it?

Because in the so-called Western diet, food has been replaced by nutrients, and common sense by confusion--most of what we’re consuming today is longer the product of nature but of food science. The result is what Michael Pollan calls the American Paradox: The more we worry about nutrition, the less healthy we see to become. With In Defense of Food, Pollan proposes a new (and very old) answer to the question of what we should eat that comes down to seven simple but liberating words: "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." Pollan’s bracing and eloquent manifesto shows us how we can start making thoughtful food choices that will enrich our lives, enlarge our sense of what it means to be healthy, and bring pleasure back to eating.

"Michael Pollan [is the] designated repository for the nation's food conscience."
-Frank Bruni, The New York Times

" A remarkable volume . . . engrossing . . . [Pollan] offers those prescriptions Americans so desperately crave."
-The Washington Post

"A tough, witty, cogent rebuttal to the proposition that food can be redced to its nutritional components without the loss of something essential... [a] lively, invaluable book."
--Janet Maslin, The New York Times

"In Defense of Food is written with Pollan's customary bite, ringing clarity and brilliance at connecting the dots."
-The Seattle Times

Michael Pollan’s newest book Cooked: A Natural History of Transformation--the story of our most trusted food expert’s culinary education--was published by The Penguin Press in April 2013.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Significant Seven, January 2008: Food is the one thing that Americans hate to love and, as it turns out, love to hate. What we want to eat has been ousted by the notion of what we should eat, and it's at this nexus of hunger and hang-up that Michael Pollan poses his most salient question: where is the food in our food? What follows in In Defense of Food is a series of wonderfully clear and thoughtful answers that help us omnivores navigate the nutritional minefield that's come to typify our food culture. Many processed foods vie for a spot in our grocery baskets, claiming to lower cholesterol, weight, glucose levels, you name it. Yet Pollan shows that these convenient "healthy" alternatives to whole foods are appallingly inconvenient: our health has a nation has only deteriorated since we started exiling carbs, fats--even fruits--from our daily meals. His razor-sharp analysis of the American diet (as well as its architects and its detractors) offers an inspiring glimpse of what it would be like if we could (a la Humpty Dumpty) put our food back together again and reconsider what it means to eat well. In a season filled with rallying cries to lose weight and be healthy, Pollan's call to action—"Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants."--is a program I actually want to follow. --Anne Bartholomew

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Pollan provides another shocking yet essential treatise on the industrialized Western diet and its detrimental effects on our bodies and culture. Here he lays siege to the food industry and scientists' attempts to reduce food and the cultural practices of eating into bite-size concepts known as nutrients, and contemplates the follies of doing so. As an increasing number of Americans are overfed and undernourished, Pollan makes a strong argument for serious reconsideration of our eating habits and casts a suspicious eye on the food industry and its more pernicious and misleading practices. Listeners will undoubtedly find themselves reconsidering their own eating habits. Scott Brick, who narrated Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma, carries forward the same tone and consistency, thus creating a narrative continuity between the two books. Brick renders the text with an expert's skill, delivering well-timed pauses and accurate emphasis. He executes Pollan's asides and sarcasm with an uncanny ability that makes listening infinitely better than reading. So compelling is his tone, listeners may have trouble discerning whether Brick's conviction or talent drives his powerful performance.

From Bookmarks Magazine
Berkeley, California-based journalism professor and New York Times Magazine contributing writer Michael Pollan, whose previous work on the subject includes The Botany of Desire and the best-selling The Omnivore’s Dilemma, has placed himself at the forefront of food writing. He preaches a back-to-basics approach and a close questioning of the avalanche of information that has come out of our diet-obsessed society. Despite the accusations of a few critics as being a little alarmist, a little elitist, and a little obvious (not everyone has the access to or the resources to eat the food Pollan suggests), the book encourages a simple approach to eating that will strike a chord with readers weary of conflicting information and unrealistic weight-loss and wellness programs. So the message of the book and its well-written delivery can’t be faulted. The question is, do we need to hear it all again?

Back to Nature
By Bozena Klejne
It is so good to read a book about nutrition that does not promote any new diet! The author's message is plain and simple: Go back to nature, eat wholesome foods, and don't bother with dieting. Don't overeat; instead eat slowly, and enjoy your meals - such notion has already been promoted by Mireille Guiliano in her bestseller "French Women Don't Get Fat".

Our curse is processed food. The dieting industry completely distorted our feeding process. Our desire to improve everything and to separate 'needed' ingredients from the 'unneeded' ones leads us to refining most of our food products. However, our artificially 'improved' food only seemingly has the same nutritious qualities as natural food. Artificial and natural foods have as little in common as silk roses with real ones.

Processed food is easily obtainable, doesn't require much work to prepare, and, unfortunately, it is often also addictive. At the same time it is full of calories with very small nutritional content.

Like "The Omnivore's Dilemma", Pollan's new book is indeed eye-opening. It makes us think twice about what we are going to put into our mouths the next time we eat. For more reading about the danger of refined foods I strongly recommend Can W e Live 150 - another book devoted to living in agreement with nature, and revealing the secrets of healthy diet.

We truly are what we eat . . . . . or don't eat
By Theodore A. Rushton
Americans are fat.

Who's to blame? The government. Ay, but there's the rub. If the government undoes its mischievous agricultural subsidies, voters in farm states will throw the rascals out of office. Look what happened to Sen. John McCain in Iowa because he wants to end ethanol subsidies. No politician can afford to be public spirited instead of self-centered. The cure is not in government.

Instead, an intelligent solution begins with this book. Pollan goes to the heart of the matter, which is the content of our food. Our consumer society is based on making attractive products. For food, this means added sugar or added fat.

To quote Pollan: ". . . we're eating a whole lot more, at least 300 more calories a day than we consumed in 1985. What kind of calories? Nearly a quarter of these additional calories come from added sugars (and most of that in the form of high-fructose corn syrup); roughly another quarter from added fat . . . "

These extra calories are from nutrient-deficient food. It began with refined flour in the 1870s which removed bran and wheat germ to produce long-lasting snowy white flour. Consumers loved it because flour no longer turned rancid, and it didn't become infected with bugs.

Okay. Why didn't bugs chomp down on this new flour? Quite simply because the nutrients, the bran, wheat germ, carotene, were gone. Pollan explains, ". . . this gorgeous white powder was nutritionally worthless, or nearly so. Much the same is now true for corn flour and white rice." Take a look at a package of white flour and count the additives that make up for the loss of natural ingredients. Then you'll understand the basic thrust of this book and its remedies.

How do refined carbohydrates affect us? They are implicated in several chronic diseases including diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers.

This book outlines those problems and practical solutions to the lack of nutrients and excess of fat and sugar in our daily food. Quite simply, good health is often less a matter of miracle medicines than of common sense meals. Pollan outlines the problem and offers solutions, as indicated in a University of Minnesota study of natural ingredients in wheat which concluded, "This analysis suggests that something else in the whole grain protects against death."

Protects against death? Did that get your interest? If so, this book is truly a major step toward a much healthier lifestyle . . . . . merely by changing the foods you eat.

Try it. You'll like it.

Some good basic info, but lacks scientific rigor
By LifeboatB
Michael Pollan's book has some generally good advice about what to eat, and some fascinating/disturbing info about the American food industry, but I was continually frustrated by the author's weak attention to research. Pollan is a not a scientist, and doesn't seem to find it very important to ground his assertions with unimpeachable facts. His advice can sometimes be contradictory ("don't eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn't recognize" but "eat tofu"--If your great-grandmother didn't come from Asia, it's doubtful she would recognize anything made of bean curd) and he tends to cite sources that he likes, rather than sources he's really investigated. For example, Pollan would never list a dairy-industry pamphlet as one of his sources, but he gleefully quotes some rather doubtful statements from an organic-food-industry pamphlet, and apparently didn't bother to ask even one secondary source to verify them. He writes a compelling essay showing that nutrition and dietary habits are incredibly difficult for scientists to study, and implies that any information based on nutritional studies is flawed, yet quotes certain studies as if they are somehow immune to this problem. Pollan maintains that the American government's health-education programs are a major cause of the obesity epidemic, yet the descriptions he gives of these programs don't match my memory of what was actually being taught at the time. And because he gives merely general endnotes, rather than specific footnotes, it's difficult to check where he got his information.

I also had a little trouble with Pollan's tone, which is strangely naive, and occasionally condescending. He seems overly impressed with some of his own statements, such as his claim that humans are the only animals that turn to experts to tell them what to eat. Even if one accepts that this is true, humans do a lot of things that animals don't do, and in many cases, we should be glad of it. (And as Paula Poundstone has pointed out, she has to tell her dog to get his head out of the garbage every day.)

I think Pollan is basically right that the American food industry would benefit from a major overhaul, and the suggestions he's making to the government would make us all healthier if they're implemented. But it's too bad that someone with generally sound ideas can't take a little more trouble with the details. Overall, if you read this book to learn how to eat healthier, you'll get some good tips, but take his "facts" with a grain of salt. This is definitely a book to be read, but it should be read critically.

The Way We Never Were: American Families and the Nostalgia Trap, by Stephanie Coontz

Leave It to Beaver was not a documentary, a man’s home has never been his castle, the ‘male breadwinner marriage’ is the least traditional family in history, and rape and sexual assault were far higher in the 1970s than they are today. In The Way We Never Were, acclaimed historian Stephanie Coontz provides a myth-shattering examination of two centuries of the American family, sweeping away misconceptions about the past that cloud current debates about domestic life. The 1950s do not present a workable model of how to conduct our personal lives today, Coontz argues, and neither does any other era from our cultural past. This revised edition includes a new introduction and epilogue, looking at what has and has not changed since the original publication in 1992, and exploring how the clash between growing gender equality and growing economic inequality is reshaping family life, marriage, and male-female relationships in our modern era. Now more relevant than ever, The Way We Never Were continues to be a potent corrective to dangerous nostalgia for an American tradition that never really existed.

Review
Los Angeles Times
“A treasure.... Coontz’s ample evidence exposes the falseness, sentimentality and self-righteousness of most public statements about the family.”

New York Times Book Review
“Often brilliant and invariably provocative.”

Minneapolis Star Tribune
“[The Way We Never Were is] one of the few books I’ve carried with me through years and moves – because it’s a welcome and hopeful reminder that families always have faced, and overcome, transitions and challenges. In the revised book, Coontz offers an equally honest and upbeat review of the way things really are, despite dire predictions of a culture in crisis.”

Entertainment Weekly
“Coontz reminds us that the ‘good old days’ were never quite that in her excellent history of the American family.”

The Oklahoman
“David West is getting close to finishing another book. That’s not some sort of metaphor. The NBA veteran is a voracious reader, almost always carrying his latest book on a team plane or his electronic tablet into the locker room. For the past few weeks, he’s been immersed in a book by social historian Stephanie Coontz. It’s called The Way We Never Were: American Families and the Nostalgia Trap. The book is about shattering myths. So is David West.”

Jonathan Yardley, Washington Post Book World
“[Coontz] approaches the subject of what we now insist up on calling ‘family values’ with what is, in the current atmosphere, a refreshing lack of partisan cant.”

The National Memo
“Stephanie Coontz’s 1992 book was a work of first-rate history, and it undermined a slew of common misperceptions of family life in America, but it was also a plea to take off the rose-colored glasses that cause us to get so many political issues wrong. Fittingly, Coontz’s publisher, Basic Books, has released a revised edition just as the moralizing we’ve come to expect from presidential campaigns kicks into overdrive.”

The Society Pages
“The latest edition of Stephanie Coontz’s The Way We Never Were: American Families and the Nostalgia Trap is an essential read for policymakers… Coontz’s book makes for an absorbing, sometimes shocking, often wryly funny read. Both comprehensive and comprehensible, it’s a veritable one-stop shop for reliable research on how public policy and culture affect families.”

Romper
“If you’ve ever questioned whether the ‘Good Old Days’ were really all that good, The Way We Never Were is worth a read. [Coontz] puts ‘traditional family values’ in a historical context and examines whether or not the idea was realistic. It will make you glad we don’t have to vacuum in heels anymore.”

Spiked Review of Books (UK)
“The Way We Never Were was such a great achievement and an important step forward. It provided a much-needed corrective to the romanticised view of the 1950s family, and began to defuse some of the more hysterical and fatalistic discussions about teen pregnancy and the underclass….A new epilogue takes a stab at addressing some of today’s mistaken assumptions about the family. It all makes for a work that continues to provide plenty of food for thought.”

Ellen Galinsky, President, Families and Work Institute
“Stephanie Coontz is a national treasure. Her work, always solidly grounded in the best and most comprehensive research, is consistently groundbreaking. She changes the way we understand the past, present, and the future. What’s more, her new paradigms change the way we live and work!”

Paula England, 2015-15 President, American Sociological Association
"Stephanie Coontz has her finger on the pulse of contemporary families like no one else in America. In this book, she busts numerous myths about families in the past and clearly explains what is going on in today’s families."

William H. Chafe, Alice Mary Baldwin Professor of History, Duke University, the former president, Organization of American Historians
"More than twenty years ago, in The Way We Never Were, Stephanie Coontz cut through all the bizarre stereotypes we carry with us about marriage and the family in America. Now, in a brilliant revision, she jolts us once again by bringing us up to date on when people marry, how income inequality affects family life, and why we have made so much progress on issues of gay marriage, and so little on issues of poverty and women’s reproductive rights. A terrific read with amazing new information!"

Newsday
“Coontz presents fascinating facts and figures that explode the cherished myths about self-sufficient, happy, moral families.”

The Nation
“Historically rich, and loaded with anecdotal evidence, The Way We Never Were effectively demolishes the normal, traditional nuclear family as neither normal nor traditional, and not even nuclear.”

Publishers Weekly
“A wonderfully perceptive, myth-debunking report.... An important contribution to the current debate on family values.”

Kirkus
“Clear, incisive, and distinguished by Coontz’s personal conviction and by its vast range of cogent examples, including capsule histories of women in the labor force and of black families. Fascinating, persuasive, politically relevant.”

Frank Furstenberg, Zellerbach Family Professor of Sociology, Emeritus, University of Pennsylvania
“This small book has had an outsized influence on the way social scientists think about the recent history of the American family. It remains the starting point for anyone who hopes to understand how contemporary family life came about and where we may be headed in the future.”

Linda Burton, Dean of Social Sciences and James B. Duke Professor of Sociology, Duke University
“There is no better commentary on the status and processes of American families than The Way We Never Were. Stephanie Coontz writes about the realities of family life in an uncompromising way that integrates evidence-based research with the souls and everyday lives of kin within and across generations and across time and space. In my family sociology courses a spontaneous awakening occurs for students who read this book for the first time. They never look at families the same way, which is a game changer as they consider family life in their futures and question the meaning of families in their present lives. Stephanie Coontz has given the field a true gift that guides us in a journey of understanding the evolution of family life in real time and under real circumstances. Illuminating, provocative, and a must read for all!”

Steven Mintz, Professor of History, University of Texas at Austin
"A powerful antidote to the misleading myths and misplaced nostalgia that too often dominate discussions of family life, this essential book tells the true history of today’s extraordinarily diverse families. Drawing upon the most recent research, the nation’s foremost historian of marriage explains why family life changed so radically in the course of a single generation, presenting a remarkably balanced perspective on the losses and gains that have accompanied this revolution."

San Francisco Chronicle
“Coontz’s strength is in the way she shows that families of every era have been blamed for conditions beyond their control.”

Library Journal
“[Coontz] persuasively dispels the myths and stereotypes of ‘traditional’ family values as the product of the postwar era.”

Not Exactly Updated
By D. Paige
I was disappointed because I expected a lot of new content; however, from what I can tell, only a revised intro and conclusion have been added, which means most (or all) of the essay-content contains references that are somewhat outdated for readers under the age of 40.

Advertised For the Amateur Historian, But Reads Like A Scholarly Text Most Of The Time
By Zachary Koenig
I was drawn to this book because it seemed like a really interesting topic. The concept of "family" (at least in the nuclear sense) seems to have peaked in the 1950s, a notion that is often referenced in terms of the supposed "loss of family values" in America. But is that really the case? Has "family life" really dropped off in the past few decades? Or was "family" a rather nebulous concept to begin with? Those are the types of topics that author Stephanie Coontz covers in "The Way We Never Were".

This books looks at a number of different topics/themes to try and understand the evolution of the American value. It first looks at the history of family structure in America, including key gender stereotypes/myths, and then tackles such issues as welfare, marriage, sex/reproduction, African-American families, and other family-related topics.

There is no doubt that the material in "Way We Never Were" is fascinating and offers some very important information in understanding the concept of "family". For example, I found the information on welfare to be supremely interesting (maybe the best topic of the whole book) for how it makes the case that welfare likely isn't being abused as much as we might think and really that it is just taking the place of familial help that once came from small communities. Other avenues that Coontz explores are interesting as well.

The problem, however, is that the book reads as much like a college textbook as it does a regular work of nonfiction. There are reams and reams of statistics quoted at the reader, and Coontz is very careful about making any inferences from the data (like a good researcher should be, in all honesty). What it comes down to then is that I was looking for a book that would editorialize a bit and "fill in the gaps" for me. I wanted the author to make a few inferences or adopt a more conversational tone, but that was never the point of this work. It almost feels a bit dishonest to market the book with a flashy cover and engaging promotional material, only to dive in and have it be so dry (in spots) and obviously written for more scholarly purposes.

Overall, then, "Way We Never Were" was a middling experience for me. The topics covered were indeed interesting, but I wasn't expecting such a deep, dense read that could have been studied in many of my undergraduate courses. If you are thinking of picking up this book, just be prepared for that.

Life was better for some than others
By Erik
The title should be "The Way we Were." She describes (albeit with a rather left wing perspective) the first half of the 20th century much in accord with my Grandfather's diaries, and the second half much as I remember it growing up in a middle class environment. Life was better for some than others, better for the working class in the first part of the 20th century than today, in some important ways (access to college, safety in the streets, cost of houses). Strange that she leaves out the Vietnam War and the 1960s riots and their causes, management and mismanagement.
Her perspective gets in the way of noting that "government," (an undefined entity) got the money that it "used to subsidize the middle class families of the 1950s" mostly from those families.
Except for the excursions into liberal semi-outrage, the book is a fair exposition of the changes in family, working classes, and conditions for women and men, over the past century (the diaries don't go back much further). Those who haven't lived much of it may find it semi-informative, but they would be well advised to counter the bias by reviewing the Oakland Tribune and Time Magazine Archives.
After reading it, my assessment is "meh."

Walter Benjamin and Theology (Perspectives in Continental Philosophy (FUP))From Fordham University Press

In the Arcades Project, Walter Benjamin writes that his work is "related to theology as blotting pad is related to ink. It is saturated with it." For a thinker so decisive to critical literary, cultural, political, and aesthetic writings over the past half-century, Benjamin's relationship to theological matters has been less observed than it should, even despite a variety of attempts over the last four decades to illuminate the theological elements latent within his eclectic and occasional writings. Such attempts, though undeniably crucial to comprehending his thought, remain in need of deepened systematic analysis. In bringing together some of the most renowned experts from both sides of the Atlantic, Walter Benjamin and Theology seeks to establish a new site from which to address both the issue of Benjamin's relationship with theology and all the crucial aspects that Benjamin himself grappled with when addressing the field and operations of theological inquiry.

Review
"Ours is an age of revivified political religion, and many have come to feel that to understand the current troubles the conventional liberal oppositions - between reason and unreason, secularism and religion - no longer suffice. Even as we resist the authoritarian strains of religion, the
question therefore arises as to whether we must adopt a more dialectical search for critical instruction within the realm of the theological itself. For such a task the thought of Walter Benjamin offers an important resource. Transposing theology into philosophy and philosophy back into theology
with alchemical skill, his critical legacy continues to inspire novel reflections on a wide range of themes such as eschatology and apocalypse, messianism and transience, divine violence and divine hope. This excellent volume brings together essays by some of our most accomplished scholars to
interrogate that legacy providing crucial resource for all future discussion of these endlessly compelling themes."
