This book aims to demystify fundamental biophysics for students in the health and biosciences required to study physics and to understand the mechanistic behaviour of biosystems. The text is well supplemented by worked conceptual examples that will constitute the main source for the students, while combining conceptual examples and practice problems with more quantitative examples and recent technological advances.

"Written with support from health science professionals and students studying physics, this dynamic book follows well-established introductory physics curricula and presents the necessary concepts of physics as clearly and succinctly as possible." (Asiaing.com, 26 November 2010)
From the Back Cover
Physics is central to the study of biomedical science, and in many cases, students are required to have an understanding of basic physics to help appreciate the behaviour of biosystems. Written with support from health science professionals and students studying physics, this dynamic book follows well-established introductory physics curricula and presents the necessary concepts of physics as clearly and succinctly as possible.
Aware that an inclination for physics is an issue for many health science students, the authors have featured many applications of physics in the biomedical sciences to encourage the reader’s interest. Each chapter features conceptual examples, diagrams, ideas and challenges, with interspersed problems to assist the reader and concludes with a summary of key concepts and equations, and further practice problems.
The chapters are split into six sections as follows;
- Mechanics; kinematics, force and Newton’s Laws of Motion, motion in a circle, statics, energy, momentum, motion, waves, and sound and hearing.
- Bulk Materials; elasticity, pressure, buoyancy, surface tension, fluid dynamics and molecular transport phenomena.
- Thermodynamics; temperature, ideal gases, water vapour and the atmosphere, heat transfer, and thermodynamics and the body.
- Electricity and DC circuits; static, electric force, field, electric potential, energy, capacitance, direct currents and DC circuits and time behaviour of RC circuits.
- Optics; the nature of light, geometric optics, the eye and vision, and wave optics.
- Radiation and Health; atoms, the nucleus and nuclear physics, production, interaction and biological effects of Ionizing radiation, medical imaging, and magnetism and MRI.
The objective of this textbook is to enhance the students’ learning of physics by teaching biological physics effectively, using a technique that has already been proven to be inspiring for those concerned about their education in this field of science.
Intended for first and second-year undergraduate students in the health sciences with little background in mathematics or physics, this valuable text can also be used as an introduction to physics for other life science majors who are interested in physics or who wish to gain a broad understanding of the subject.

A biochemist on a biophysics textbook
By a scientist
Books like this are pretty rare. I never had the benefit of any books like this when I was learning biophysics. Howard Berg has an excellent book that focuses on the Random Walk (diffusion) but covers how flight works, fluid flow in blood vessels, and a bunch of other fascinating problems in biology.
I had very high hopes for this book. It addresses a hole in the market that has existed for a long time. I was a little surprised that it comes from a team in New Zealand, which is obvious from the appearance of cricket balls in some of the problems and the exclusive use of metric units.
This book starts, as all the best physics books do, almost from first principles. It makes this book an ideal text for advanced high school courses, undergrad courses, and some grad school courses. There are some worked problems in the text and many problems at the end of each chapter but the solutions are not included in this book. The pressure chapters are followed with one on fluid flow, diffusion, and osmosis. The chapter on diffusion and osmosis is only four pages. They are an excellent summary of those two fundamental mechanisms of molecular transport, but I've seen better in a regular biology book. The electricity chapters do have a page on action potentials in cells, but I expected more from a dedicated biological physics book.
My biggest disappointment came in the cursory discussion of diffraction, which did not include anything on x-ray crystallography. To me a biophysics book has to mention this, not only because it is one of the most important techniques in modern biophysics, but also because it's an excellent example of how waves interact with individual atoms.
The chapters are arranged to explain the underlying physics and then covers how that applies to biology. For instance, the first chapters start with the basics of motion and then covers waves and finally soundwaves and how hearing works. The book seems to focus mostly on physics with occasional chapters explaining how that applies to real world biology.
The chapter on hearing focuses mostly on the sound waves and doesn't spend a lot of time on how the sound is perceived in the cochlea and barely mentions the ion channels that are used to conduct the perception of sound to the brain.
In the end, this is an excellent introduction to physics with worked examples that are relevant to all of us, especially biologists. It is not a full-blown biophysics book. To do that, it would need more biology, greater discussion of ion channels, and more protein structures (and explanation of how the structures were obtained). If this book is required/recommended for your course, it's a high quality book and worth getting. If you're a physicist with a passing interest in biology, it's also worth considering. If you're an actual biophysicist, or studying biophysics to a high level in grad school, this probably won't cover the areas that you really need, although it's still good for the physics basics that you'll need.

A very nice introduction to many areas of physics
By Metallurgist
Note - I am a retired metallurgist who has studied and used physics for about 50 years, so I am not a typical reader. I chose this book from the vine program because I was interested in a nice review, with applications to biology (an aspect of physics that I have not heretofore been exposed to). I feel that the book satisfied my needs in both areas and I recommend it but understand that, as the title states, this is only an introduction to the subject, not a comprehensive or in-depth treatment of it.
The aim of this book is to present an introduction to physics for someone specializing in the life sciences, who did not take an in-depth college physics course. This book covers material that as is covered in most freshmen physics books, plus some topics that are covered in more advanced courses. In addition, the material is applied to the human body, which is not done in a general physics text. However, the presentation in this book is a only introductory and is geared towards someone who is not going to take more advanced physics and engineering courses, but needs to know the basics of these subjects. Thus, the basic correlating equations are provided, but not derived, and the applications are limited to those cases that do not require calculus or more advanced math for their solution.
This book contains a very nice overview of many areas of physics, divided into six areas, namely: 1) Mechanics, 2) Bulk Materials, 3) Thermodynamics, 4) Electricity and DC Circuits, 5) Optics and 6) Radiation and Health. The book also contains two appendices; one that covers physical constants and the other that reviews basic math and science skills. This material is clearly presented, with numerous well thought out figures, solved problems, chapter summaries and homework problems. The presentation is very basic and involves no calculus or differential equations, but does use algebra and basic trigonometry of the sort covered in high school math classes.
I liked this book and feel that it does what it sets out to do. While it does not replace a more in-depth physics text, it does provide the basics and a foundation from which to understand how this material is applied to the life sciences. Thus, fluid flow is discussed and then applied to blood flow through arteries, the behavior of gasses is discussed and applied to the lungs, electrical fields are discussed and applied to the heart, optics is discussed and applied to the eye, and thermodynamics is covered and then a chapter is devoted to applying it to the body. I should also note that these applications are only briefly discussed and are not detailed treatments of the sort found in a more advanced text.
I recommend this book not only to someone in the intended life sciences audience, but also to those like myself who are interested in a nice overview of physics and how it is applied to biological systems.

Excellent...
By Darwin's Bulldog
This is a physics book, plain and simple, and would make a good review of Physics 101/102. However, examples and problems are drawn from both physics and biology and this is of course what the book is designed to teach. Chapters on statics and dynamics are presented without calculus in surprisingly logical ways, so lack of advanced math should not hold a reader back. Algebra and geometry of course required. The extension of statics to loading on muscles and bone and the extension of optics to human vision are examples how the book logically takes physics into real world application in biology. Of course it is a college level text and the reader should be prepared to apply college level study. But it sure is nice to see books at this level on Amazon!
