About the Author
Katherine Ackley taught in the English Department at the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point from 1979 to 2002 and also served as coordinator of the Women's Studies Program for 10 years and assistant dean of Graduate Studies for five years. Her research interests center on women in literature, with emphasis on literary representations of women's issues and, more recently, British crime writers. Her books include THE NOVELS OF BARBARA PYM (1989), WOMEN AND VIOLENCE IN LITERATURE: AN ESSAY COLLECTION (1990), MISOGYNY IN LITERATURE: AN ESSAY COLLECTION (1992), and ESSAYS FROM CONTEMPORARY CULTURE (2004, 5th Edition). The author of dozens of published articles, she received more than 20 grants for research and development and was the first woman to receive the UWSP University Scholar Award. Dr. Ackley earned a master's degree in English from Purdue University and a Ph.D. in English from Ball State University.

Great Book

I have read many books on Flying Star and find this one a very good one. I admit I am slightly biased towards Lillian Too, but I really enjoy her writing style and find her short divisions of information easy to digest and remember. This is consistent in her Feng Shui series of books. This book is a lot easier to read than her other book on the subject, Lillian Too's Flying Star Feng Shui for the Master Practitioner: The Ultimate Guide to Advanced Practice Feng Shui: Stage II (Lillian Too's Feng Shui in Small Doses), also sold here. It is also much deeper than her pocket sized Flying Star Feng Shui for Period 8, which might a good place to start if you just want to know what Flyng Star is about.

I would really recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn this area of Feng Shui. It is important to understand that it assumes working knowledge of compass Feng Shui. However, she does indeed remind us the readers that we can find the charts at her website. We don't have to become master level proficient at Flying Star movement patterns at the start.

The layout of the book is such that it is comprised of 162 "tips" some of which are shorter, some longer. Certainly the numbers and the importance of Mountain Stars and Water Stars are covered by Ms. Too. Additionally, she weaved in Symbolic Feng Shui as enhancements or to compensate for a Flying Star ailment within Feng Shui. OVerall happy with this purchase.. there is a lot of information about flying star combinations, and Lillian too makes it easy to understand and explained questions which have been unanswered by a lot of other books I have bought. This is a must have!!!! Of course no book can cover everything.. but this book is about as close as it gets.

Calls For Sequels

This novella left me wanting much, much more. It felt like the first act to a full novel, and I hope to see sequels at some point. I didn't realize what was happening at the end immediately, but it became apparent with one of the illustrations, and I enjoyed the beginning and middle of the book a great deal. The number of viewpoints especially made me wonder if that was really it. There were four of them in this novella, and that seemed like too many for such a short piece. However, the action was phenomenal and I became attached to all of the character that survived until the middle.

Finally!!!!

I've followed a pagan path for 7 years. I've blown through various internet "101" courses left and right. I reached a point on my path that I wanted to start getting ready to teach my children when they were old enough. I wanted to spare them the hours upon hours of taking notes from dozens of books, transferring to note cards, then constructing them into a format that was condusive to learning. Guess what....that's what this book is!!!! By the way Mr. Batty...where were you more than a year ago when I started that "little" project?!?!?!? If you remember back to high school textbooks...this is the textbook that would have been in a Wicca/Witchcraft 101 class. The format is unbelievable!! It has study questions at the end of each section and even a comprehensive "Final Exam". It's designed for a teacher as well as a student of the craft. I've started a magical group and we'll use this as a textbook in our education course!! I've ordered dozens upon dozens of books off of amazon.com and other sites. I've never left a review for any of them. But I couldn't sit back without giving this one the recognition it deserves. This book is new and I actually think I'm the first reviewer. Now it's easy to teach Witchcraft

For years, I have taught magick and witchcraft to a few students at a time - your typical master/apprentice style of passing down information. However, I have always been frustrated by the amount of information in my head and my complete lack of organization. There is SO much information out there about Wicca and magick, and the longer I practiced and the more I read, the more blank books I filled with spells, rituals, and correspondences, the more disorganized a teacher I became.
Finally, I found this book - with actual lesson plans, study questions and homework, exams, practical advice to teachers and students, suggested reading at the end of each lesson - the lessons are laid out so well that any teacher, with a minimal amount of preparation, can teach without worrying that the necessary information will not get passed on.
I hope that Miles Batty writes more books in the same way... this book covers what new witches need to know so well, that I have my fingers crossed that he'll write other books to help me teach the more advanced students - although this particular book of his DOES cover enough material in such a way that students can progress on their own afterwards.
Thank you Miles Batty for writing such a WONDERFUL book - it's a tool that every teaching witch should have.

Good for planning a class outline

This is a pretty good book. It has some good discussion topics and some really good questions that you can assign or go over in class. I did find a few problems with this book. There are several Gods/Goddesses that are categorized. incorrectly such as stating that Parvati is a Warrior God instead of a Goddess and claiming that Kali sprang forth from HIS brow. Parvati is a Goddess who is an aspect of Durga and Kali sprang forth from her (Durga) brow fully formed to fight the demons. There were several other inaccuracies when it came to pantheons but for the most part it is a good basic book that can really help you outline a beginner class.

I am somewhat familiar with the era covered by this book, since my relatives participated in the Goldfield Boom into the 1920's. This is an excellent read for those interested in the early mining promotions.

A FINANCIAL ADVENTURE FROM THE PAST

This a book describing the adventures of a young man trying to earning his living from horse racing, mining and financial journalism respectively during the days of the wild west in USA. These events took place over a century and a half ago but still very relevant today. Today as the world is getting increasingly financialised it is also seething with a lot of disinformation, deception and half truths and plain bad advice. This book sheds a lot of light on the opaque world of tricksters and conmen who part the gullible members of the public of their hard earned money. Very entertaining and some parts are real funny. This is definately a forgotten classic from the wild west
