A great help!

I decided to learn guitar at the young age of 70. I discovered Justin's site on the internet and have been working my way (slowly) through his beginner's course. I was frustrated at not being able to find good sheet music for the songs in his course. His book, Beginner's Songbook, is excellent. It gives you more help than any other source I have found. I would recommend it to anyone trying to learn to play the guitar.

Required supplement for any beginner

I am more of a fingerstyle guitarist so I prefer to devote more of my practice time on that rather than strumming. However, I don't want to neglect that skill or at least the ability to strum out some singalong tunes if the occasion calls for it.
Justin's Beginner's Songbook is the perfect tool to help me practice strumming patterns while learning some singalong tunes.

Contrary to some other reviewers of this book, I like the book's set-up. New chords are given at the beginning at each stage only. There isn't a section that gives you chord diagrams so it forces you to memorize chord diagrams as you progress through the book rather than rely on convenient chord diagrams above every lyric. It isn't a chord reference book so if you're looking for that, there are plenty of cheap ones on Amazon or even free on the internet.

The chord name is given above the words of the lyrics and on the corresponding page Justin gives his recommended strumming pattern as well as some tips and trivia. There are other chord strum-a-long books out there but most of them usually just give the chords and the lyrics and not much else. You definitely get a bit more with this book. That being said, if you are familiar with Justin's videos, there really isn't anything new in the book from what he says/does in his videos. So if you are looking for something new, you may be disappointed. I purchased this mainly because I am a visual learner and seeing strumming patterns and lyrics right in front of me makes learning a lot easier (as opposed to watching Justin's videos over and over again). If you have surpassed the beginner level in Justin's guitar course, I'd recommend skipping this.

The song selection is great! With 100 songs, there is something for everyone across every skill level. Artists like Taylor Swift, Eric Clapton, Otis Redding, Don MacLean, Bob Marley and Johnny Cash are represented in the selection.

I definitely recommend using this book with Justin's free online videos on YouTube or on his website as it gives the book's lessons more context.

I ordered this book through a third-party seller supposedly located in Indiana, USA. Dispatch was quick but it took a while to arrive because it actually was shipped from overseas. As of this writing, Amazon doesn't offer this title directly but don't let that stop you.

Highly recommended for beginners really looking to develop their skills and creativity.

Don't want to gush, but....

This songbook is most helpful as you take his online course, but I'm sure it would be helpful even if you aren't.
When you get a good teacher like Justin, you realize how many mediocre-or even bad ones you have had to endure.
The book has the lyrics and music (guitar chords) along with suggested strumming patterns. You also get his help online on his website, justinguitar.com, or on You tube. He plays the songs on video where you can play along with him.
I get the feeling that I have a personal teacher who cares, (he has a friendly manner) is organized, never patronizing, doesn't skip steps, and has had years of musical training and experience.
It probably doesn't hurt that he lives and works in one of the musical capitals of the world-London.
Some of the songs I didn't know such as Lennon's "Working Class Hero" and "Common People" by the Pulp. I enjoyed reading the lyrics which weren't the usual love songs. They tell an interesting story and have social significance. However, there are more "popular" songs too. Enough songs to keep you going and interested.
If a beginner like me without a good musical education, your musical terminology will improve as you start each song. For example,in the first songs you are introduced to the use of capos and what off-beats are.
The book is more than a book, it's a musical journey. One that is just right-not too easy-or too hard. You can do it, but you grow as you keep learning and trying.
There is a forum on his site where he answers questions and other learners share their experiences playing the songs. Also where he didn't play a song, I found a student of his playing the song on You tube, and it helped me a lot. Where else do you get a songbook and a free forum (a community of people like yourself) asking questions, sharing difficulties and getting advice from Justin and the other guitar learners?

Achieving the Impossible: A Successful African History Survey

Paul Nugent has written one of the most impressive single-volume texts on African history--with a good chance that it is the best. This book reads smoothly while covering a vast continental terrain, including north Africa; and explores issues, questions, episodes in great depth. Nugent is able to handle complexity without drowning the reader in it. Perhaps, though, the most impressive aspect of this volume is Nugent's careful judgment. He also offers new themes to consider. For maps, charts, statistics, lists, the book is also excellent. It took a long time for this to be produced says the author. It was time well-spent. From the 1950s to now, Africa has never been treated better. The book is fresh.

fantastic book! it was really in depth and gives a very clear picture of how modern Africa came to be. would recommend it to anyone wanting a concise, in depth understanding of Africa.

Great Lego extender

After receiving this and the "Fabulous Figures" book by the same author as a birthday gift, my 10 year old spent hours building with Legos. A great book for the child with a tub full of bricks as an alternative to yet another Lego set. Clear Lego-type instuctions and ideas for variations to jump start the imagination.

Requires obscure pieces

The animals in this book require around 20 pieces of lego each. My son has a pretty diverse set of over 2000 pieces of classic lego, yet he does not have all of the pieces needed to make even *one* of these animals, even *without* trying to stick to the right colors. Most of the animals require at least one piece that I've never even *seen* before.

Beginner book

I got this book for my nine year old son. He went through and complete most of the projects over the Christmas holidays. However, once complete, he does not appear to be interested in it anymore.
I was hoping that the book would spark his imagination. However, most of the projects were so simple that they only took a few minutes to complete.
Anyway, the drawings are good. Each project comes with a complete list of parts and several drawings. It is just like buying the individual kits.

Contemporary Research on crime, prisons, and social control has largely ignored women. Partial Justice, the only full-scale study of the origins and development of women’s prisons in the United States, traces their evolution from the late eighteenth century to the present day. It shows that the character of penal treatment was involved in the very definition of womanhood for incarcerated women, a definition that varied by race and social class.

Rafter traces the evolution of women’s prisons, showing that it followed two markedly different models. Custodial institutions for women literally grew out of men’s penitentiaries, starting from a separate room for women. Eventually women were housed in their own separate facilities–a development that ironically inaugurated a continuing history of inmate neglect. Then, later in the nineteenth century, women convicted of milder offenses, such as morals charges, were placed into a new kind of institution. The reformatory was a result of middle-class reform movements, and it attempted to rehabilitate to a degree unknown in men’s prisons. Tracing regional and racial variations in these two branches of institutions over time, Rafter finds that the criminal justice system has historically meted out partial justice to female inmates. Women have benefited in neither case.

Partial Justice draws in first-hand accounts, legislative documents, reports by investigatory commissions, and most importantly, the records of over 4,600 female prisoners taken from the original registers of five institutions. This second edition includes two new chapters that bring the story into the present day and discusses measures now being used to challenge the partial justice women have historically experienced.

Nicole Hahn Rafter is a professor in the College of Criminal Justice, Northeastern University. Her most recent book is White Trash: The Eugenic Family Studies, 1877-1919.

About the Author
Joseph F. Healey is Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Christopher Newport University in Virginia. He received his PhD in sociology and anthropology from the University of Virginia. An innovative and experienced teacher of numerous race and ethnicity courses, he has written articles on minority groups, the sociology of sport, social movements, and violence, and he is also the author of Statistics: A Tool for Social Research (10th ed., 2014).

Eileen O’Brien is an Assistant Professor at SUNY-Brockport where her teaching and research interests range from introductory sociology to courses on race, ethnicity, gender, social class and theory. She authored Whites Confront Racism (Rowan and Littlefield, 2001) and has co-authored White Men on Race (Beacon Press, 2003) with Joe Feagin, a pre-eminent scholar on race and ethnic relations. She received her Ph.D. from the U.of Florida in 1999 M.A. from Ohio State in 1996; both degrees in sociology.
