Intriguing Collection of Mind-Bending Crime Fiction Stories. Beware Though, Several are Genuinely Haunting Stories.
By Bill Anderson
Length: Print, 237 pages; Audible, not available as an audio book, but it certainly could make for an interesting listen with good narrators.
Target Audience/Genre: This is a crime fiction anthology that proves just how short stories can sell on Amazon Kindle.
Q - What was the Amazon Rank on the date this review was published?
A – 153-free.
Q - How was this book obtained?
A – Purchased.
Q - Is this a book that I can read without having to read others first?
A – Yes. The ten stories are all stand alone, by different authors.
Q - Are there a lot of typos/misspellings, grammatical errors or other editing failures?
A – No.
Q - Is this a fast, easy read or is it more of a leisure read?
A – These are fast-paced and, since they are short stories, each is an incredibly fast read.
Q - What sort of language does this writer use to amplify the points made?
A – UK-English, Adult Language.
Q - My biggest pleasure or disappointment?
A – I'm not normally a huge fan of anthologies. Mind you, I buy them with some regularity, but I usually only read about half the stories. This one is a bit different from other collections of short stories.
What I loved or found intriguing:
Each story is totally different from the other. Sure, this sounds like a no brainer, since it is an anthology. But, what I mean is that they are so totally different. I read one story and thought, “That was really great. Let me read the next.”
Then, my mind was still harking back to the first story and I found it advantageous to read a story, then close the book. Then Read a different book entirely (on dog treat recipes, so as to break my mind fully clear of the previous haunting read). Then, after reading a few pages of that book, I found myself returning to Capital Crimes to read the next story. After that, I returned back to my dog treat book so I could clear my mind yet again.
What Disturbed me:
Finally, when I found that each story had haunted me so, I decided to write this review with, even before finishing the book. Although I devoured each story, I did feel that some of them ended just a bit to abruptly. I'm not sure if that is because the writer was trying to tease me into buying their book, promoted at the end of the story, but, in one or two cases, it did tend to disturb me...
The only other negative I can think of is: Why in the world hasn’t the author/publisher engaged a professional voice actor to narrate these incredible tales? Actually, if it were my decision, I would pay for ten actors to narrate the ten stories and I would have the editor narrate most of the remaining bits. Or, perhaps have each author read his/her/their bio.
If funding is the problem, though, each author could be asked to read their story so that we at least get to hear them emphasize the points they feel should be emphasized.
At any rate, this is a collection of quick, snappy, brilliant crime fiction that shows a side of Britain that I’ve never come across before.
Because each story is penned by a different writer, posting an excerpt would serve no assistance, so I will not post an excerpt.
Bottom Line:
Stunning views into the UK’s underground. Each work is written by a different author, but each person (or team in one instance) provides a too often missed view of life on the wrong side of the law.
If, though, you are looking for stories in which nobody uses foul language (especially the f-bomb) and if you’re searching for wholesome stories in which the criminal always pays for his crime, this anthology will not work for you.
Comments regarding your opinion of this book or of my review, whether favorable or unfavorable, are always welcome. If you buy the book based on my review and become disappointed, especially, I do want to know that and I want to understand how I can improve as a book reviewer. Just please be polite.
Thank you.

A great book
By Ignite
This is that rare beast, the anthology which doesn't contain a single story about which I have reservations. They differ in length and aren't at all similar in theme, though there's an abundance of corpses. I really enjoyed the diversity here, some being amusing as well as thrilling.
These short stories show ingenuity, some slick and classy writing and will give you another set of authors to follow. A great book.

Excellent crime anthology
By Modupe Hendricks
Capital Crimes is a great crime based anthology. I assume that at least one of the stories would've been bad, I was wrong. All of the 10 stories are different, there's a secret agent son, the leader of one of the Serbian forces who committed atrocities, the soldier getting ready to go across the pond in World War I, the Indian Marines, and so on. I especially liked the story Mountain of Light about the Indian marine commandos; who can say that they are not minor gods? Karma is another great story about the Serbian war criminal who ultimately gets his just desserts.
The writers in this analogy seem to all have some kind of European background especially British English speakers who use English terms such as: bloodly, arse, class A's, parlour, etc. I now have 10 additional authors whose books I would like to read. I highly recommend this analogy. You will enjoy these authors imaginations.
