Keepers of the Cave, by Gerri Hill

While the investigations go on in Dallas and Baton Rouge after the disappearance of a senator’s daughter, FBI agents CJ Johnston and Paige Riley are assigned to the sleepy backwoods of East Texas for a dead-end assignment to infiltrate an all-girls school.

Random disappearances dating back fifty years and more raise red flags that point to the tiny, isolated community of Hoganville. But CJ and Paige fear there will be little distraction from the memories of the one-night stand they shared six months ago.

Nevertheless, they integrate themselves into the lives of the teachers and staff, but soon the odd behavior of the townspeople has them convinced something sinister lurks there. Something, perhaps, that even the residents of Hoganville don’t know about.

Six-time Goldie winner Gerri Hill delivers thrills and passion in the chilling Keepers of the Cave.

A Nice Change of Pace
By CAB
I've read most, if not all of Gerri Hill's books and I have to say from the very beginning this is NOT a typical "fluffy" Gerri Hill story. It feels grittier, edgier, and it's definitely creepy. My usual modus operandi is to read a Gerri Hill in one or two sittings. In part because they tend to be light, easy, enjoyable reads. This one took me a few days, not because it was less enjoyable but because it required more active participation on my part to track the story; which means I had to think while reading. I do think that Gerri Hill managed to keep enough "romance" in the story to keep the die hard romance readers happy and it was intermingled in nicely with the weirdness going on in Hoganville.

If you are going to get hung up on the weirdness of the things that happen in the story and whether they could be real or not, maybe this isn't the story for you... BUT if you like a creepy mystery with creepy people, which I do, then this is definitely a nice change of pace.

I actually hope we see some more of Paige and CJ.

Not your usual Gerri Hill -- in a good way!
By Amazon Customer
I've read almost all of Gerri Hill's books and while I like them, I've always considered them to be of the "light and easy" variety. This book was different than all the rest and I really, really enjoyed it! It was darker, edgier and much more of a mystery thriller.

There are certain parts that pushed the limit of what can be believed -- but if you can let go and immerse yourself in the world these characters live in, everything works.

I am recommending this book to all my friends and I hope Gerri Hill continues with this style of story-telling!

cults, monsters, strap-on's...
By kindle reader
...so many firsts for Gerri Hill, ahahaha...

Here we meet sizzling leads who bear a striking resemblance to the butch-femme cops in Hunter's Way (popular one which is also by this author). And it's been a year or two since I read that one, but I can still say with certainty that these two are sexier, the build up is amazingly more intense, and their chemistry is downright tangible.

Honestly, these two share the hottest kissing scenes I've ever come across in my lezfic thus far!! ;)

If you loved the leads in Hunter's Way... or if you just love a hot pair of opposites that complement each other with both humor and sincere affection... you'll just love CJ and Paige.

So CJ is our dark-haired butch in this one who is more sexy than masculine (love it)-- kind of juvenile horndog sexy, lol. She wasn't raised with much and has a troubled childhood which leads her to grow into a womanizing charmer with a troubled spirit that no one will ever get close to. She finds her way into the FBI where she works closely with a couple of guys and one gorgeous, unattainable blonde (Paige) who seems way out of her league.

Paige Riley couldn't be more different. She's had a very privileged albeit somewhat closeted life, should be married to the right man (very straight-looking)... and she does know and love her wine. Her experience in relationships is minimal at best.

These two playfully, yet incessantly, flirt in the office, but deny an honest moment of weakness they simply pretend never happened. When an eerie series of disappearances puts them both undercover at a detention facility/school for girls out in the boonies, they must live on site where they must pretend to be a couple in a small one-bedroom cabin, ha ha.... and the rest is just pure fun to follow.

The best part of this book is the resistance and the build up. It is just plain exemplary for this genre. And I absolutely love it that each lead gets her fair amount of focus and description. Gerri Hill doesn't favor or seem to identify with only one gender in this story as so many other authors do... both of these characters -butch and femme- are alive and very, very vivid.

The parallel thread in this hot romance is a somewhat creepy, but ultimately, mediocre paranormal-detective plot.

The town of Hoganville, just outside the reform school, is full of robe-wearing weirdos who are as isolated as the Amish and as brainwashed as the Kool-Aid drinking Jim Jones disciples. But are they harmless weirdos or psycho killers?!?!?! ha ha... only the lesbians know for sure!!

While there were moments here of genuine creepiness and atmospheric paranormal activity, ultimately, I found the Hoganville setting/plot a tad dull and trite. These scenes were kinda slow and at times I plodded through them waiting to get back to the more interesting CJ and Paige. Admittedly, this may also speak to my indifference toward the paranormal genre; however, I know a less-than-clever plot when I see one. Personally, I think a school full of bad girls would have been a better (and potentionally humorous) complement to the romance, lol. Yet there is not even one scene here with any of them. Do love Paige's assignment at the school though, lol.

Despite the paranormal stuff... thankfully, Gerri Hill keeps the romance at the forefront and there was never an excessive abandonment of our leads.

Spoiler...

Love the strap-on cameo even though it wasn't the sexiest portrayal I've ever seen or imagined... even the humor was a real treat-- NOT so much the sexual abuse theme that came closely attached afterwards. Kind of a mood-killer there, Gerri...

5+ stars for the romance/chemistry and 2-3 stars for the paranormal plot. If you love the character chemistry here then definitely read Hunter's Way and The Killing Room where you'll definitely find a similar dynamic.
