About the Author

Adrian Schulz lives in Berlin, Germany and received a degree in architecture from TU Berlin. Early in his studies, he became interested in architectural photography, and thus it became the subject of his thesis. Adrian now works as a professional architectural photographer both in Germany and North America.

Good Beginner Book

This book is probably a good introduction to architectural photography for beginners. Over 50% of the book is very basic stuff, rule of thirds, golden ratio, exposure, difference between full frame and cropped sensor cameras, how to choose a tripod.... Things you can find in any basic photography book.

The architecture specific section details some good basic techniques. The authors photos are quite good, I would be very happy if I could make photos of this quality. However, the description of the technique used for each photo is very curse: contains the focal length and exposure but few details of the photo capture, and no details of the digital manipulation for each photo which would be very helpful.

Most interestingly, the author speak often about how important a tilt shift lens is, but then gives no details on how to use one! How about a chapter on using a tilt shift lens?

The last part of the book is dedicated to digital image processing. The HDR section for Photomatix is quite good if you have never used the software, although cursory. The section on Photoshop I believe is out of date, it doesn't appear to be CS6 compatible.

Overall, if you are a beginning photographer, then this if probably good information. If you are an experienced photographer and looking for advanced techniques, you'll probably be disappointed.

A FANTASTIC READ

As an architect with over forty years in the design of commercial buildings; and as a photographer for over fifty years, i have to say that this is a must read for ANYONE interested in photographing buildings and other man-made structures.

The technical information and the aspects of photographing are 'right-on' and leads to an understanding of the life of a building. The and of the photograph is almost as important as all the technical information.

There is great discussion as to the use of the images; from commisioned work on a specific building to the making of an 'art' image for the photographer's use and enjoyment.

In my own work I have been employing HDR for interior shots for about nine years. The discussion of this by the author is informative without being over the top.

This is definately a book I would recomend to anyone. It is also a must for any practicing architect or engineer.

Detailed But Boring

I usually expect that there will improvements in the second edition of a book over the first. Unfortunately, after looking at my review of the first edition of this book, I found the improvements to be marginal.

After a brief introduction to the history of architectural art, the book has three sections that deal with camera technology, shooting techniques and image processing. Throughout the emphasis is on the geometry of architectural photography, emphasizing how distortion can creep into such photographs and suggesting techniques for mitigating those distortions. The author's writing is straight forward, and with one or two exceptions comprehensive. It is also quite dull. It might even incline the reader to think architectural photography is boring.

The author emphasizes the conflict between photographer and architect, in that the architect wants to display his design art, while the photographer may be more interested in photographic art. Unfortunately, while there are a few artistic images, little of the book is dedicated to how to make architectural images photographically more artful.

Interior architectural photography is covered, but only briefly, and with little instruction on lighting, which is one of the key elements of this sub-genre.

The section on post-processing will seem like old hat to experienced Photoshop users, except for the section on the lens correction tool, which is a little more detailed than most explanations. The sub-sections on the use of HDR and panoramic stitching software seemed more extensive than in the last edition, reflecting the increased popularity of these tools, although curiously the author demonstrates stitching software using Hugin, which is freeware and, in my experience, a little slower than, say, an industry standard like PTGUI. On the other hand, Schulz also provides instruction on the Photoshop implementations of HDR and stitching, which are perfectly respectable and available within Photoshop, if not often the tools of choice of specialists. Even though no other author has dealt with the subject (as far as I know), I had hoped that Schulz would deal with stitched image projections, but that topic was unmentioned.

If you are interested in exterior architectural photography, this book will tell you everything you need to know, although you might have to stifle a yawn.

Not worth my money

I don't like how the book is structured. If the book is for "dummies", the reader should be able to quickly find what they're looking for. I prefer the McGraw-Hill Quick Step style of writing. I want to be able to quickly find what I want, and not feel like I have to read entire chapters to find what I'm looking for. Or to re-read to see if they actually answered my question. I feel this was a waste of money. I wish a SharePoint 2016 version was available under McGraw-Hill.

Important, fascinating, insightful.

I can honestly say that, in many ways, this is one of the most important -- and life changing -- books I have ever read. I am giving it 5 stars as an overall review because of the significance of the message, even though I think the book could have used a more heavy-handed editor.

I became familiar with Langer's work only through articles that appeared occasionally in the New York Times. I am guilty of thinking, often, that any person featured there is the very best __________ (fill in the blank). I am often disappointed. But not this time.

I have been an on and off (with long periods of off) meditator for 20 years, and I can say with certainty: 1. I never liked it 2. I found this book to be infinitely more helpful with regard to catching my own self defeating patterns.

While this isn't a how-to book, and it doesn't include a list of steps towards Langer's definition of mindfulness (which I should mention is different from Buddhism's in many ways), I immediately learned life-changing strategies for coping with every day stress; I also realized that some of the things in the book, I already do, which offered some insight into why I am resilient in some ways and not in others. To wit, I saw my own psychological traps. This book makes you see the whole world differently, in fact, and I don't think that is an exaggeration.

My criticism of the book lies in the descriptions of some of the experiments, which are boring at best but some of them I just could not comprehend how the conclusions were drawn. A lot of these experiments just didn't make sense to me, and I would have preferred that the methodology only be included in footnotes, not the actual body of the book. In my opinion, the book would be far more interesting to hear Langer expound upon her theories and insights from her research.

Overall, however, this is a phenomenal work, and I cannot imagine that the information here would not be beneficial to everyone, regardless of life stage -- very old or young or some place in between.

Langer is awesome and her research is truly fascinating.

A year and a half later, not only were these people more cheerful, active, and alert than a similar group in the same institution who were not given these choices and responsibilities, but many more of them were still alive. In fact, less than half as many of the decision-making, plant-minding residents had died as had those in the other group. This experiment, with its startling results, began over ten years of research into the powerful effects of what my colleagues and I came to call mindfulness, and of its counterpart, the equally powerful but destructive state of mindlessness.

Unlike the exotic `altered states of consciousness' that we read so much about, mindfulness and mindlessness are so common that few of us appreciate their importance or make use of their power to change our lives. Ellen Langer is one of the world's leading research scientists, the first tenured female professor in Harvard's Psychology Department, and creator of what she calls the psychology of possibility--challenging the limits of what we perceive to be impossible.

This book was published over 25 years ago in 1989--before the concept of "mindfulness" went mainstream. Ellen focuses on a Western orientation to mindfulness rather than the popular Eastern. As she says, "Meditation is a tool to achieve post-meditative mindfulness. Regardless of how we get there, either through meditation or more directly by paying attention to novelty and questioning assumptions, to be mindful is to be in the present, noticing all the wonders that we didn't realize were right in front of us."

Opened My Eyes in New Ways.

For you lovers of Jon Kabat-Zinn and MBSR, you may want to forgo this approach toward mindfulness. It's not self-help, not a guide, not a set of tenets or steps. But, Langer is a Harvard research psychologist who has been working in this field a long time and who has taken the topic in important and interesting directions that are different from MBSR. I am involved in both psychology and mindfulness, teaching both at the college level. If, however, you happen to be open minded, intelligent and curious in understanding the logic of our psyches, this is a good read. It's not clinical, but also not written for dummies. Great book, glad I found it becasue Langer's work is informing my own now.

Terrible book and full of typos

We used this book in my Masters-level international finance course. I highly recommend that anyone (profs, students, practitioners) thinking about adopting or reading an IF book to shy away from this one. It is too verbose; it lacks cohesion; it's unclear and full of small but critical mistakes. The solutions online are also full of errors. If you already know the material from another course, or are doing research in the area, then perhaps you might use this as a reference book. For the regular reader, stay away - you will find the text frustrating and confusing. You can get a nearly complete preprint copy free by searching online, so try it first before you buy it.

Full of typos, unclear structure, do not recommend.

I am taking a Master's Level International Finance course and this is the book for the class. The answer key is full of typos and the practice problems and quiz questions are not even close to what is talked about in the text. Some questions are repeated in multiple chapters. The author also tries to be funny, by mentioning martians or making fun of people that aren't smart by calling them "cerebrally underendowed". Definitely not what you would expect in a typical finance book. I would avoid this text. It was very unclear. There is not any structure to it. I spent most of the time on Investopedia, because the text did not make sense. I don't recommend this book for beginners, or even intermediate finance students. I am not new to finance and have worked in corporate finance and at a university, and found this book to be difficult to understand. I had to reread chapters 3 times to partially understand the math and concepts.

Very in-depth introduction to the workings of international financial markets

Piet Sercu was my professor for the courses "International Finance" and "Foreign Direct Investment", we used a draft version of the textbook in 2008-09 before it was published. It is a very in-depth book, not really material for people with a superficial interest in the financial world. The book is full of practical examples & exercices that help you fully comprehend the material. Very interesting book in my opinion.

In nature's hands

Emile Zola centers his epic novel The Earth on nature and the important elements that are at the forefront is the natural landscape and how families and traditions play a role in its existence. Or as Douglas Parmee emphasizes in the introduction, it is a story of hereditary and environment. The story takes place in rural France during the late 19th century and is a part of the Rougot-Macquart series that focused upon the harsh structures of a farming community. The Fouan and Buteau family live in a small village in the fictitiously named Rognes within Aix-en-Provence, an place where its dwellers thrive on the agrarian way of life.

Zola was part of the literary movement of naturalism that swept the late 1880s up to 1921 and a response nature’s progression of the land but also transitions that occurred within human nature. Especially, after great conflicts before the Great War that showed signs that modern ways of life was taking precedence and conflicts that emerged with the Franco-Prussian war that Zola wrote in The Debacle. It is clearly understood throughout the novel with the countryside and the daily routines of the main characters of the family as they work on their farm and cultivate the land and animals. Their responsibility is to maintain and to preserve centuries of tradition that is symbolic to the sustenance of life, birth, marriage, and death as well as history. But what appears to be predominant before the previous is taking care of the land, which has been an ancient economic and social construct since civilization began under the system of feudalism. And the families such as the Fouan came from a lineage of serfs of the Rognes-Bouqueval family that left remnants within a burial site located among half-buried stones at a demolished castle. Indeed, significant to the history of the family, maintain their class and social standing within the region, i.e. their name and their wealth. However, as Zola suggests with characters such as Fouan’s son named Jesus Christ, this part of the novel almost breathes a cross between a D.H. Lawrence novel and Ingmar Bergman film that usually contains an underlying and deep symbolic meaning of existentialism and philosophy and religion in the midst. But Jesus Christ, known for his flatulence is a subtle symbol placed in the novel as comic relief and one to not to take things too seriously and the least religious of the characters in the book; Zola shows how the characters challenge conventionality and morality with much vivid imagery.

The Earth is a novel filled with unpredictable moments that may surprise readers to the story’s conclusion. And it is a story embedded with the history of a family and the land that they fought to preserve. For the first-time Emile Zola reader or the curious, it is a novel that leaves room for discussion.

Back to the roots

The ultimate naturalist novel. It may sound corny, but if ever a book was "earthy", this one certainly is. Many people, including Zola's fellow naturalists, have been disgusted by the scenes of rape, murder and general bad behaviour in it, but in fact none of them are included solely for their shock effect. The characters are all too true to life, and although they may be brutish, they are not all stupid, as is shown in the cafe discussions about the agricultural market and the threat from cheap American grain imports (remember, this is in the 1860s). One of the few Zola books where the member of the Rougon-Macquart family in it is not one of the main characters, and in fact his role in the action is almost accidental. For him, and perhaps for most readers, the farmers are aliens from another world but this book is an excellent work and one of Zola's best, though it may make you think twice about buying that nice little house in the country, especially in France.

The second best novel of all time?

This book is a masterpiece. Had Zola not written the awe-inspiring Germinal, this would clearly be his greatest work. Zola does his best writing when he focuses not on Parisian society but rather on the lower classes: the laborers, the peasants, the working stiffs. In this case, his subject matter is the farmers of the Beauce, an agricultural region between Chartres and Orleans. Here, families have cultivated the same plots of land for generations. In fact, land itself is everything to these people, and they will do whatever they can to protect the earth they have, and to acquire as much more as they can before they die. When Old Fouan decides to divide up his holdings among his three children, no one is happy with the portion they receive. Their avarice of earth leads to mutual animosity and eventually to treachery. Jean Macquart, an affable, hard-working farmhand, is, like us, an outsider in this hermetic world, until he falls in love with a farmer's daughter and becomes a participant in their private war.

The scope of the book is wide, and looks beyond the Fouan family to examine political and social issues of the time, including the effect of the impending Franco-Prussian War, the triumphs and failures of modern scientific farming methods, and how the market's regulation of prices damns the farmers to eternal poverty. Zola's description of the agricultural life, its rewards and its hardships, is vivid and moving. He neither romanticizes nor denigrates the farmer's relationship to the land, but rather paints a realistic picture of dirty, exhausting toil that nonetheless has its physical and spiritual rewards.

The book achieves a tremendous range of mood. It's like an emotional roller coaster. There are passages in the book which are downright terrifying. Elsewhere there are moments which are laugh-out-loud funny. Zola obviously had a lot of fun writing the more light-hearted scenes in the book. He includes everything from a farting contest to a vomiting donkey. Overall, however, this novel is a dark portrayal of human greed and selfishness, and the brutal lengths to which people will go to satisfy their hunger for property. This book should be read by all.

About the Author
Patrick Casement is a training analyst of the British Psycho-Analytical Society. Having graduated in theology and anthropology at Cambridge, he worked for ten years as a social worker and qualified with the British Association of Psychotherapists before training to become a psychoanalyst. He is currently in full-time private practice. His first book, which comprises Part I of this volume, is well known throughout Europe and has achieved the status of a modern classic.

Practical clinical wisdom cracked open like a nut

My supervisor recommended this book to me and I must say, I was surprised by how excellent it was. First, Casement writes very clearly so its a pleasure to read. The essence of what he writes about is how to listen to a patient, as well as to yourself, so as to understand what impact you are having- or might have- on the person and the treatment. This deceptively simple and reductive statement cannot capture how deeply and extensively he makes use of this skill, so as to transform it into an art. He connects his practice approach to theory, especially to Winnicott's contributions, but the book remains a practical and not a theoretical work. I believe this book transcends theoretical orientation and the recommended way of working can be applied no matter what your orientation is. Many rich case examples bring to life the concepts they illustrate. I admire his honesty and his apparent dedication to plumbing the depths of his own experience in session. But the book is much more than an illustration of a master clinician at work. There is much wisdom to be found in this book and it can be read numerous times to fully absorb and incorporate it. This book goes on my 'desert island' list.

A little dated, but very valuable theory. Lots of case examples, which is helpful for the illustration of Casement's points.
